01/09/2015

The driver of a hit and run vehicle from a Tuesday morning crash has been identified and arrested.

Twenty-nine year old Timothy Tuura of Iron River contacted the Sheriff’s Office Wednesday afternoon and admitted to being the driver involved in the crash.

The crash was reported at 6:19 am Tuesday January 6th on USH 2 near the Peace Lutheran Church in the Village of Poplar. Thomas Casper, 28, Maple, told deputies he was westbound on USH 2 when an eastbound vehicle crossed the centerline and hit his car before he could react. Casper’s vehicle went into the ditch with driver side damage. Casper was taken via ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Carl Kurtz, 38, Maple, was also travelling west on USH 2 behind the Casper vehicle. The front of his vehicle was also struck. Kurtz spun out on the highway and was able to pull off the road into a driveway.

The vehicle that crossed the centerline fled the scene without stopping.

Deputies located red car parts at the crash scene determined to be from the hit and run vehicle. They took them to Poplar Auto where the part numbers were ran and determined to be from a 95-99 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Sgt. Jake Engelman was familiar with such a vehicle and went with Iron River PD to a residence in Iron River and spoke to Timothy Tuura. At that time, Tuura stated he borrowed his car a couple days prior to a female friend whose last name he didn’t know, and she was supposed to bring it back today. Officers did not believe his story.

Believing the vehicle was hidden somewhere between Poplar and Iron River, a Facebook post was put out with the vehicle description asking for the public’s help in locating it. Within an hour, a caller reported seeing a red Monte Carlo parked off of Cemetery Rd in Poplar, behind the Polar Gas propane tanks. The vehicle was registered to Tuura and damage and parts were matched from the crash scene.

Tuura contacted the Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday afternoon, came in and confessed to being the driver involved in the crash. He stated he was sorry and was scared after he hit the car because he has a suspended driver’s license.

Tuura was arrested for Hit and Run Causing Property Damage and Operating After Suspension. His court date is January 26th, 2015.
