One Dead in Sunday Afternoon Crash

A South Range man died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Bennett.

The crash, reported at 3:37pm on 5-24-2015, occurred at the intersection of USH 53 and CTH L.

A 2012 Volkswagon Passat, operated by Gregory Willis, 68, South Range, was eastbound on CTH L crossing USH 53 when it failed to yield to a northbound 2005 GMC 1500 pick-up, operated by Joseph Schiff, 33, Superior.  The vehicles collided in the intersection and came to rest in the NE corner ditch.

Schiff reported a leg/ankle injury. A two-year old child properly restrained in a child safety seat in the back seat of the Schiff vehicle was uninjured.

Willis was taken by ambulance to a Duluth hospital where he succumbed to the injuries later in the evening.

The crash remains under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
